New models of care

Ensuring that all women in Australia can access sexual and reproductive health services when they need it regardless of where they live is an important focus of our research program. SPHERE is developing and trialling new models of care to help improve access to abortion and contraception services, particularly in rural and regional areas.

Current Projects

We’re currently developing and testing new models of care in community pharmacy and general practice that support the use of effective contraception and improve access to medical abortion and preconception care services.

The ALLIANCE Trial

This co-designed project aims to support the use of effective contraception among women at high risk of unintended pregnancy by introducing private consultations, contraceptive counselling and referral services in a community pharmacy setting.

The ORIENT Study

Australian women living in rural and regional areas experience many barriers to accessing long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) and early medical abortion (EMA) services. The ORIENT Study is investigating how the quality, availability and accessibility of LARC (including intrauterine devices and implants) and EMA might be improved using a nurse-led model of care in general practice.

Developing a practice nurse-led model of care to deliver preconception interventions

This project builds on our early qualitative work investigating the barriers and enablers to the delivery and uptake of preconception care in general practice to develop, pilot, and evaluate an innovative model of care in general practice to deliver practice nurse-led preconception care.
