The ORIENT Study

Australian women living in rural and regional areas experience many barriers to accessing long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) and early medical abortion (EMA) services.

The ORIENT Study is investigating how the quality, availability and accessibility of LARC (including intrauterine devices and implants) and EMA might be improved using a nurse-led model of care in general practice. General practitioners and practicing nurses are encouraged to join the study.

The study is being implemented in general practice settings supported by online education, implant insertion and removal training, telehealth, and a virtual community of practice.

The study was co-designed to put patients-first, while integrating the perspectives of primary care providers and partner stakeholders.

For this study, practices needed to have at least two general practitioners and one practice nurse enrolled into the study and a practice manager to serve as a study liaison.

Eligible practices received an implementation bundle including:
  • Free online accredited LARC and EMA training
  • Online educational outreach via a 60min session to discuss practical strategies for implementing the nurse-led model, tailored to each clinic setting
  • Enrolment into an Australia-wide virtual Community of Practice for access to clinical experts, discussions with like-minded clinicians and resources to support delivery of LARC and EMA services
  • Reimbursement and CPD points
